Pilaf, also known as pilau or pilaw, is a traditional dish that is popular in many cultures around the world. It is made by cooking rice in a flavorful broth, along with various spices, herbs, and other ingredients. Here is a recipe for a simple and delicious pilaf dish:
Ingredients:
1 cup of long-grain rice
1 tablespoon of butter
1 onion, finely chopped
1 teaspoon of ground cumin
1 teaspoon of ground coriander
1 teaspoon of turmeric
Salt and pepper, to taste
2 cups of chicken or vegetable broth
1/4 cup of raisins (optional)
1/4 cup of slivered almonds (optional)
Instructions:
Melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
Add the cumin, coriander, and turmeric to the pot and cook for an additional minute, stirring constantly.
Add the rice to the pot and stir until the rice is well coated with the spices and butter.
Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Pour the broth over the rice and bring to a boil.
Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer for about 18-20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the liquid has been absorbed.
If desired, you can add raisins and slivered almonds to the pot for the last 5 minutes of cooking.
Once done, remove the pot from the heat and let it sit, covered, for 5 minutes.
Fluff the rice with a fork before serving.
This recipe serves 4, and you can add your own twist to it by adding vegetables such as carrots, peas, or bell peppers. You can also use chicken broth instead of vegetable broth and add some diced chicken or lamb for a more substantial meal.
Pilaf is a very versatile dish that can be served with a variety of dishes such as stews, curries or even a salad and can be enjoyed by itself. It’s a delicious, comforting and easy to make dish that you can add to your recipe collection.
